DIST. ATTY. GIL GARCETTI DEFEATED IN LANDSLIDE; MISCONDUCT IN GATES ASSASSINATION LIKELY A FACTOR

Los Angeles County District Attorney Gil Garcetti has been decisively defeated in his quest for a third term. Challenger Steve Cooley overcame Garcetti by a 2-1 margin after a bitterly negative campaign on both sides.

Citizens for Truth, which endorsed Cooley over Garcetti, believes that Garcetti's misconduct and failure to release key files related to the Gates assassination contributed to his defeat. Citizens for Truth has long maintained that the truth behind the Gates murder has never been fully revealed, and that official negligence, incompetence and misconduct contributed to an effective cover-up.

"This defeat was a long time coming and well-deserved," said Debra Meagher, President of Citizens for Truth. "Gil Garcetti stood in the way of the truth, and now he's paying the price. This should be a lesson to all public officials."

Citizens for Truth looks forward to the release of files promised by Cooley and will continue to press for cooperation in the continuing investigation into the unsolved Gates murder.
